Welcome to the Maasai Mara, one of Kenya’s most remarkable wildlife destinations. The reserve began as a protected area in 1948 and was expanded in 1961 to form the foundation of today’s Mara. It is part of the larger Mara–Serengeti ecosystem shared by Kenya and Tanzania. The Mara is famous for its exceptional concentration of wildlife and home to the Big Five, the annual wildebeest migration, the Mara River and its large populations of predators. Beyond wildlife, the Mara is also deeply connected to Maasai culture and the communities that surround this extraordinary ecosystem.
