Welcome to Lake Naivasha, one of Kenya’s most fascinating freshwater lakes in the Great Rift Valley. Unlike many of the other Rift Valley lakes, Naivasha contains freshwater despite having no permanent surface outlet. It is part of a wetland that supports more than 400 bird species and is home to large populations of hippos. Around the lake, tourism, fishing and horticulture, floriculture are important economic activities. It is an important destination for boat safaris, bird watching, hippo viewing, fishing and wildlife excursions, including visits to Crescent Island. Lake Naivasha lies on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, a region shaped by major geological and volcanic processes. Unlike many of the other Rift Valley lakes, which are highly alkaline, Naivasha is a freshwater lake. Its freshwater character is particularly remarkable because the lake has no permanent surface outlet.
