Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya’s most spectacular safari destinations, famous for its large elephant herds, open savannahs, wetlands and breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. The name Amboseli comes from the Maasai word Empusel, associated with a salty and dusty place, reflecting the dry landscape around its ancient lake basin. The area has long been inhabited and used by the Maasai for pastoralism and was first protected as a game reserve in 1906 before becoming a national park in 1974. Amboseli is internationally important for elephant conservation and research, and its ecosystem supports lions, cheetahs, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos and more than 400 bird species. Despite its dry climate, underground water linked to Mount Kilimanjaro feeds permanent wetlands, attracting wildlife throughout the year. For visitors, Amboseli offers a unique combination of wildlife, dramatic scenery, Maasai culture and the iconic sight of elephants with Mount Kilimanjaro in the background
